Topology-optimized Custom Bracket Supported by Finite Element Analysis in Solidworks

Reducing the size or mass, or otherwise optimizing a component of some mechanical device, is an important aspect of engineering. With the rise of 3D printing the fabrication of such optimized parts has become easier, and so the process of optimization has become more widespread. Within this class project, we reduced the mass of an alloy steel wall bracket by 25% while maintaining its ability to support a distributed load of 30 N. SOLDIWORKS Simulation was used to perform topology optimization on the design domain. Many parameters were tested until identifying a combination of resolution, constraints, and goals that produced (1) intact mounting holes and (2) 25% mass reduction.

This project was incredibly fascinating to me as a pursue a career in medical device R&D. In this field, the weight of medical devices, especially implantables, must be constrained for safety and accessibility. A lighter prosthetic leg, for example, achieved with TO, could improve the running speed of disabled athletes.
